Usually, this problem is easily solved by purchasing a model that folds up and out of the way. Many available products feature both a seat and footrest that can easily be folded simply by pushing on a small lever. In the folded position, the stair lift will only take up about 10-12 inches, depending on the model. That should leave plenty of room for foot traffic without creating a crowded and cramped staircase.
Another common solution involves using a slightly elongated track so that it curls around the edge of the staircase at the top and bottom landings. By shifting the seat just a few inches out of the way, the staircase becomes more open and easy to access. A combination of these two features can also be used to maximize space saving capabilities.
